A private investigator is someone that is trained to conduct investigations on behalf of a personal client or a corporate client. Generally, these clients are seeking information and by conducting the investigation, the private investigator's objective is to obtain the information that the client needs. Typically a private investigator will document their findings through detailed reports, video and pictures. Most states require licensing to become a private investigator.

Each state has their own requirements for being a licensed private investigator. However, most states' requirements are similar. In Ohio, candidates for licensure must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Pass a written test administered by the Ohio Department of Public Safety

  • Perform at least 2000 hours, and up to 4000 hours, of compensated, investigative work under the direction of a licensed private investigator. The number of hours required may be offset depending upon the amount of qualifying, related education that the candidate has earned.

  • Pass a criminal background check

An experienced private investigator has worked thousands of cases and has learned, through his/her experience how to obtain the information in an efficient, discrete method. Although your situation may be a new experience to you, an experienced private investigator not only has special tools and resources, but has seen and helped many other clients with very similar situations. Any experienced private investigator has had clients who have tried to obtain the information on their own and has made mistakes that have complicated the situation. When people who are not trained, and are emotionally attached to the situation, try to conduct their own investigations, they will commonly make mistakes. These mistakes will almost always make the client's objective much more difficult to obtain. If the information you seek is important to you, hire a professional!

Although many private investigators are former police officers, police detectives or law enforcement agents, they do not have law enforcement authorities or duties and do not have access to law enforcement databases. However, in most cases, an experienced, licensed investigator will have the resources and tools to legally obtain the information needed by a client. Private investigators cannot enforce laws, but do investigate crimes, for both victims and those that have been erroneously charged and convicted.
